Guam EPA opens Zero Waste Pacific training and conference

The Guam Environmental Protection Agency is hosting the first Zero Waste Pacific training and conference this week.

The national certification training began on Sunday morning at the Hilton Guam Resort and Spa. Participants will attend class through Tuesday, May 6 and take a rigorous exam on Wednesday, May 7.

“Guam will benefit greatly from having more solid waste managers and operators trained in the most up-to-date practices,” said Guam EPA Administrator Eric M. Palacios. “There are three training sessions being offered concurrently. One track focuses on recycling, another on composting and the final track is for individuals managing solid waste systems. Each training session is a comprehensive course and includes information about new technology and best practices. The more we can learn about proper solid waste practices the better equipped we are to protect our natural resources.”

The training is being conducted by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA). SWANA is the leading certifying organization for solid waste operations in the United States. Each trainer has more than a decade of experience in solid waste management.

“Our goal is to establish a local chapter of SWANA after the exam on Wednesday,” Palacios added. “A local SWANA chapter will encourage more solid waste managers in Guam to participate in this type of training and improve partnerships between solid waste managers here and in the mainland.”

Following the certification exam, the conference portion of the Zero Waste Pacific event will begin. The conference begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, May 8 and concludes at 5 p.m. Friday, May 9. Guam EPA’s Administration and Operations offices will be closed to the general public from noon to 5 p.m. on those days. Guam EPA recognizes the importance of eliminating, as best as possible, any impact that this closure will have on its customers. Any customer needing assistance during these times are encouraged to visit the Agency between 8 a.m. and noon.
