April proclaimed as Earth Month

The Guam Environmental Protection Agency (Guam EPA) today with the acting governor of Guam, Ray Tenorio, proclaimed April as Earth Month 2013.

More than 60 people attended the proclamation signing this morning. Attendees also signed pledge cards identifying what they will do during April to protect the environment. The cards will be available for the public to make environmental commitments at five Payless Supermarket locations throughout April. Guam EPA and partners in the Guam Environmental Education Committee have more than 40 events scheduled during the month to increase environmental awareness and stewardship.

“April is a very exciting month for us. The educational activities offered during the month will help every resident learn more about Guam’s natural resources and the small things they can do every day to live more sustainably,” said Guam EPA Administrator Eric M. Palacios. “Nationwide Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, but here in Guam we celebrate for an entire month. We are encouraged to see so many agencies, businesses and organizations stepping up to offer Earth Day events this month.”

Earth Day 2013 events continue this weekend with guided tours of caves at Ritidian, a snorkeling event at the War in the Pacific National Park in Asan, and a free workshop about composting. Next weekend there will feature tours of a LEED certified building, a workshop about planting trees, a freshwater fishing derby for kids and a workshop about reducing waste in the home.
